MAGIC MOON MILK
After Matcha Latte and Golden Milk, Moon Milk is popping up everywhere. The different colors and styles of this warm milk drink make it pretty instagrammable. But moon milk has more to offer than just beautiful pictures. It is actually an age-old Ayurvedic remedy for sleeplessness that is said to make your nightly slumber so much sweeter.
With so many options out there, from regular to Blue Moon Milk, I didn’t really know which one to choose. But since everything here at FABSOUL Fitness is ocean and beach inspired, I opted for a spirulina infused moon milk. Et voilà, the Magic Moon Milk was born. Imagine drinking a magic potion before bedtime that puts you right to sleep.
I remember that as a kid my grandma always told me to drink warm milk with honey before bed. I’ve never been a big fan of milk. Even before dairy was doomed bad and all the milk alternatives emerged. But apparently the calming effects of milk are known in many cultures. Only limited scientific support exists but then it has also been discovered that half of the benefits of taking sleeping pills come from placebo1. So there is that.
What is moon milk?
So what is moon milk? This Ayurvedic beverage takes your normal milk and honey recipe to the next level by adding Ashwagandha. Classified as an adaptogen, this medicinal herb is said to reduce stress, boost brain function, and help with anxiety and depression.
During a very stressful time in my life where not even exercise helped me to calm down, I ordered Ashwagandha capsules. I couldn’t really tell a difference, so I stopped taking them. This doesn’t mean that they don’t work as each body is different. I suggest you try it for yourself and see.
Many moon milk recipes also call for cinnamon and nutmeg. According to my research, many websites claim these two spices in small doses have calming effects on the body. However, I couldn’t find any scientific studies that back this up.
Anyways, I still like the idea of sipping on a warm and soothing beverage before bed. I think this act alone will calm you down and get you ready for sleep. So even if warm milk with spices does not physically put you to sleep, it might be a psychologically beneficial sleeping aid.
But remember to put your phone away because the blue light emitted from your screen will actually mess with your sleep hormones. You can always post a picture of your beautiful Magic Moon Milk tomorrow.
One last thing. What gives it the magical green color? Well, the same ingredient that also gave the unicorn toasts its sparkle: spirulina. It’s not the tastiest food in the world but seriously one of the healthiest and most nutritious ones.
Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria, better known as blue-green algea. It’s high in protein and vitamins and has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties2.
Every time I add it to my matcha latte or oatmeal, I can discover a serious improvement in my health and energy levels.
Of course you can always exchange any ingredient in the recipe to your liking.
Not a fan of spirulina? No problem, just leave it out or exchange it for lavender or rose extract.
Vegan? Than exchange the honey for maple or agave syrup.
Don’t like coconut milk? Use almond, hemp, oat or regular milk instead.
The possibilities are endless. I always love to switch things up and play around with my food, or drinks in that case.
As long as you keep the warm milk as the staple, the rest of the recipe is entirely up to you. Pretty cool, right?

- 1 cup coconut milk (or milk of your choice)
- ½ tsp ashwagandha powder
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp spirulina
- 1 tsp honey
- Heat coconut milk over low to medium heat in a small pot.
- Slowly stir in the ashwagandha powder, spirulina powder, all the spices, and the honey.
- Add to a blender to make it frothy.
- Sit back and enjoy!
